<p><span style="font-size: medium;">I&#8217;ve had an anxiety disorder for as long as I can remember. But it is gradually getting worse, to the point where the simplest things will cause me to have a panic attack. It&#8217;s taking over my life. Every therapist I&#8217;ve ever tried seeing has always just given me prescription after prescription. I want to know if any of you have this problem- if so, how do you deal with it? How do you calm yourself down? How do you cope with it? </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"></p>
<p>Ive had an anxiety disorder for a while as well, and I deal with it without prescription drugs. Basically, to deal with my panic attacks and general anxiety I will do one of 3 things.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>1. If possible, I will take some time to sit alone and meditate, it really helps to clear your mind. I cannot suggest this technique more &#8211; it takes a while to get to the point where you can meditate easily, but it works better than any medication I&#8217;ve ever taken. 2. Write/Talk out my fears at that time. I will write down or say out loud what is causing my anxiety, and the more I read or say them, the stupider they seem. 3. Talk to someone about it. In the past I used to talk to my therapist about my issues, and it did really help, but now that I don&#8217;t have health insurance, I talk to my girlfriend about it, and it really helps me out.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>I hope these techniques can help you, they really help me. I really dislike prescriptions and medications in general, I believe they cause more problems than they fix.</p>

I&#8217;ve done group presentations before and been nervous and did fine, but this is an individual presentation, so I&#8217;m even more nervous.  Any suggestions to help calm me down and feel confident about my presentation?<br />
<br />1 &#8211; practice&#8230;&#8230;.use the mirror or a friend and run through it a couple of times</p>
<p>2 &#8211; note cards&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;get the main points and some info about the supporting facts on individual numbered note cards&#8230;&#8230;so you can easily get back on track if needed.</p>
<p>3 &#8211; be the expert&#8230;&#8230;.you did the work, know your topic and think about sharing this needed (or not&#8230;.haha, depending on the class) with your friends.</p>
<p>4 &#8211; realize everyone has some nerves about presentations&#8230;..your classmates will be rooting for you to do good, because they know how nervous they feel when it&#8217;s their turn.  </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>ive smoked weed about 20 times and the first 18 were amazing but on the 18th time i was freaking out but now i know it was a anxiety attack then i gave it another shot and i happened again. terrible. at the time i didnt know it was anxiety. soo i stopped smoking because it scared me. so about 3 months later i had a terrible anxiety attack while working out idk why. and its been like 2 weeks and i feel like im having a anxiety attack 24/7 even when im reading at school with friends, my life is an anxiety attack. im scared it might be permanant there has not been one minute of the day i have not felt the anxiety since then. but i have felt like weed high for the past 2 week i feel like stoned all the time.. i tried pills but they only worked the first few days but now they really aren&#8217;t helping. i think i just have try weed again slowly little by litttle and calm my anxiety that i got from weed &#8230;i have no idea what to do what do you guys think?<br />
<br />1 &#8211; quit the drugs, idiot. 2 &#8211; I have pretty terrible anxiety attacks, some mellow ones that last upwards to a month at a time. I&#8217;ve apparently got seasonal depression &amp; an anxiety disorder. Once you&#8217;re off the drugs, if you&#8217;re still not better, then expirement different hobbies &amp; talk to friends. It helps.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I have a driving test in 3 weeks time, the only problem is I am suffering bad anxiety at the moment, do you think I would be better putting my test of until i get help for my anxiety or is there a way i can manage my anxiety on the test day so that i don&#8217;t get too nervous, is there any techniques i could use to reduce the anxiety on test day?<br />
<br />I had the same thing when I went for my test on the 7th. </p>
<p>I went the first time on March 26th, I was a little nervous, went through the test fine until I failed because some moron didn&#8217;t give me the right of way. On April 7th I went again and I was SOO nervous. I bawled my eyes out an hour before, it was raining, there was an accident at one end of the town and road construction on the other. But I did just fine and I passed. The instructors KNOW your nervous. </p>
<p>When I was in the car with the instructor I kept telling myself that he was just some guy who was giving directions to his house and I had to drop him off. When that didnt work I told myself, Hey no one knows me in this place anyway so whatever.</p>
<p>Back to your question.</p>
<p>Deep Breathing, and just put your mind somewhere else. The more you think about it the more nervous you will get. And I don&#8217;t recommend putting it off, you&#8217;ll always be nervous about it and you&#8217;ll never be ready for it until test day.</p>
<p>Just think, years from now, you&#8217;ll be telling your kids how you did on the test.<br />

<br />Well a pain killer is not going to help an anxiety attack.  If you have them frequently you should go see a doctor, they have many ways to deal with anxiety today.  And if the one your having now doesn&#8217;t go away then go see your doctor right away.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This may sound unusual but ever since a terrible episode after smoking pot, i believe that i may have permanently damaged my heart. Last January i smoked pot and immediately i began having a panic attack. My heart was beating so fast that it began to skip beats. Black spots were popping in my eyes and i thought i was losing consciousness. Ever since then, i have had intense anxiety about my heart. My heart is now always beating faster than usual and it is always skipping beats. Its also accompanied by chest pain below my left arm pit and in my back on the same level where my heart is located. Along with this, i also experience shortness of breath and panic/anxiety. This has become an everyday thing for the past 8 months since the incident. </p>
<p>I have been to therapy about the anxiety, however the therapist didn&#8217;t understand that this is not a social anxiety at all (she was trying to dissect past experiences and personality traits). So i stopped going to her and got prescribed to Alprazolam (xanax). I also went to the cardiologist but the doctor didn&#8217;t take my case seriously. It was probably because he had a 16 year old in front of him talking about how his heart beats too fast. He just said i should increase salt take.</p>
<p>well now i am off of xanax and my heart is still beating too fast. it is an everyday thing that has become debilitating. I know for sure that something isn&#8217;t right. Whatever is going on has weakened my emotions to the point that when i am confronted with a stressful situation, i have to sit down for fear of my heart failing me or leaping out of my chest. I am a social person, and since this episode i can&#8217;t be with a ton of people in social situations. </p>
<p>This problem is costing me my sanity it feels like sometimes. At the same time i can&#8217;t do physical activity because my heart will beat at 120+ bpm for hours following it. I am 17 years old, 6&#8242;3&quot;, and 160 pounds. </p>
<p>please help me. This heart/anxiety problem is really affecting my life and the only thing i see in the future is more problems. this problem has made me accept death and i think that i am way too young for that.<br />
<br />I have PD (Panic Disorder) and this sounds like PD to me. PD is when you have a panic attack, and a lot of the time you will think you are having a heart attack/ are choking/ are going to die. After you begin to have panic attacks the fear of having another often consumes your life. If I were you I would look more into PD. I am not a doctor though so if you think you have a medical problem you should definitely visit your physician.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I think I have a problem. I used to take meds but I hated how they made me feel groggy and zombie like all day so I stopped taking them. I&#8217;ve been ok for months now but I feel like im losing it again. I get really bad anxiety around people. I don&#8217;t like going to concerts or hang out in public places. I feel like I am a failure at life in general. I cant even motivate myself to clean my room. It&#8217;s a total pigs sty. I can&#8217;t motivate myself to even shower or change my clothes unless I have to leave the house. I have too much anxiety to ask anyone for help and I find it hard to talk to people about how im feeling with out breaking down. I am really worried because I am going to be a freshman in college and class starts in two weeks and I feel like I am going to fail because I cant even do every day tasks with out feeling mentally worn out. Also i am afraid I wont do well in school because when people talk to me i usually space off and i don&#8217;t hear what the person just said and it happens all of the time. So I need some help. I don&#8217;t want to take medication unless its natural and not that weird generic stuff like prozac or zoloft.<br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I need your help here. I suffer from anxiety which at times (about twice a year) gets so bad that I will go into a real deep depression. I just couldn&#8217;t stand it over the last week or so where I&#8217;m shaking and don&#8217;t sleep well, obsessive thoughts, negative thinking, etc.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been on Risperdal for the last three weeks and it was working well until about a week ago where the jitters started coming back along with the thoughts, trouble sleeping, being slightly paranoid, etc. I have also Vistarel that I can take as needed but after the 2nd or 3rd day even if I triple the dose the stuff just doesn&#8217;t do anything. In fact, I think it&#8217;s making my jitters worse.</p>
<p>I just couldn&#8217;t stand it anymore so I got my hands on some valiums yesterday and took 10MG before I went to bed. I haven&#8217;t slept that well in a LONG time. This morning I took another 10MG and I&#8217;m telling you what, I have not felt this &quot;normal&quot; in about 20 years. I&#8217;m calm, not having obsessive worry thoughts, my hands aren&#8217;t shaking. In other words I feel really good and normal like I did years ago. I don&#8217;t feel drugged up or high or anything like that. Just normal.</p>
<p>I told my doctor this and she said that she will not prescribe me valiums due to their addictive nature. Heck, I don&#8217;t even want to take these things every day so I&#8217;ll got hooked on them. Just here and there when my anxiety gets bad so I can function. I don&#8217;t want to get addicted to anything either. I can honestly say though that I have not felt this good, calm, and just plain normal and well in about 20 years.</p>
<p>So my question for you is what other drug works on the same part of the brain like valiums that I can ask to be put on? Is Xanax something that might work well? I know that&#8217;s addictive too but darn it I&#8217;ll just take the stuff when I need it. Most of the time my nerves are good enough not to need something.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s what I&#8217;ve been on thus far: Lexapro after 2 or 3 months made me not care about anything, which was bad because that included work or other responsibilities. It never made me feel good either, just dead inside. Paxil after 2 weeks made my anxiety worse. It was like doing speed or something and I couldn&#8217;t sit still. Neorontine didn&#8217;t do anything for me and was like a depressant. Vistarel doesn&#8217;t do anything after the 2nd or 3rd day. Klonopin was OK but not as good as these valiums. And like I said, Risperdal was working really well for a week or two but now it doesn&#8217;t seem to be working as well.</p>
<p>So if valium is working this well for me that tells me it is doing something that my brain needs in order to not be anxious, worry, obsesses, be slightly paranoid, and so on. It&#8217;s helping me sleep too and like I said I just can&#8217;t believe how GOOD I feel. With all the above in mind I&#8217;m hoping somebody can suggest a drug that the doctor might be willing to prescribe me that might work in some what the same way as Valium. I really need help here because as it stands my anxiety has been too bad to work. I&#8217;d even be willing to trade addiction to this stuff if it means feeling this well, calm, and normal. Thanks for any input because I have to fix this! Oh, and I am taking cognetive therapy classes as well but this is a genetic thing that runs in my family so I reall think I need to take some kind of drug to make up for what my mind is lacking.<br />
<br />A large number of benzodiazepines are available. There are major differences in potency between different benzodiazepines, so that equivalent doses vary as much as 20-fold. For example, 0.5 milligrams (mg) of alprazolam (Xanax) is approximately equivalent to 10mg of diazepam (Valium). Thus a person on 6mg of alprazolam daily, a dose not uncommonly prescribed in the US, is taking the equivalent of about 120mg of diazepam, a very high dose. These differences in strength have not always been fully appreciated by doctors, and some would not agree with the equivalents given here. Nevertheless, people on potent benzodiazepines such as alprazolam, lorazepam (Ativan) or clonazepam (Klonopin) tend to be using relatively large doses. This difference in potency is important when switching from one benzodiazepine to another, for example changing to diazepam during withdrawal, as described in the next chapter. </p>
<p>Speed of elimination<br />
Benzodiazepines also differ markedly in the speed at which they are metabolised (in the liver) and eliminated from the body (in the urine). For example, the &quot;half-life&quot; (time taken for the blood concentration to fall to half its initial value after a single dose) for triazolam (Halcion) is only 2-5 hours, while the half-life of diazepam is 20-100 hours, and that of an active metabolite of diazepam (desmethyldiazepam) is 36-200 hours. This means that half the active products of diazepam are still in the bloodstream up to 200 hours after a single dose. Clearly, with repeated daily dosing accumulation occurs and high concentrations can build up in the body (mainly in fatty tissues). There is a considerable variation between individuals in the rate at which they metabolise benzodiazepines. </p>
<p>I think Xanax would work well for you. It is stronger than Valium and, therefore, you can take a smaller dose and get the same effect. It is probably more potent and your physician would probably be apprehensive about prescribing it as well. My advice, go to a different physician.</p>
