Anxiety disorder is a very serious but very treatable illness. Millions of people suffer from anxiety disorders. This article discusses the very heart of anxiety therapy which will lead the sufferer to an understanding of anxiety disorder. This, in itself, will many times bring the sufferer toward the cure.

It can’t be understated how important it is for the anxiety sufferer to realize he or she is not alone. Many people have suffered and recovered from anxiety disorders. Step one in the recover process is realizing the power to heal is inside and it is waiting to do its magic. The sufferer simply must learn how to let this power go to work.

What Caused the Anxiety Disorder

Often anxiety disorders come on or become exacerbated with alcohol or substance abuse. However, this isn’t always the case as evidenced by the fact many children suffer from anxiety disorders. Old or young, whatever race, color or creed, anxiety disorders play no favorites. They can strike anyone.

Anxiety is a term that covers much territory. It is used to describe fears and phobias. However, to the sufferer of anxiety, the worst part is, it is so bewildering. It brings on physical manifestations that would make anyone feel he/she is suffering a heart attack or a stroke. Much of the time, the suffer may not know what has hit him.

Anxiety Can Control a Person

In short, anxiety disorders steal a person’s life because he can no longer behave or act normally. The sufferer can no longer make plans, because his life has become centered around anxiety. An anxiety sufferer fears these terrible feelings he has been experiencing, but even more, he/she fears that the worst has not yet happened and so he/she fears what the unknown more than the known.

However, no matter how bad the anxiety disorder has become, there is always hope. Anxiety disorders can be cured. The first and most important part is to learn what anxiety disorder is all about.

A doctor may prescribe different medications, which will help the sufferer tolerate anxiety disorders, but the cure can only come from inside the sufferer. Anxiety disorders are like a storm that has to run its course and if let to do so, it will go away.

The Force Behind It All

The villain in this whole anxiety story is adrenaline. Adrenaline in the body of the sufferer of anxiety is running wild. The sufferer has become overly sensitive to any sort of stimuli and the first step to being cured is for the sufferer to realize this. He must realize that there’s nothing insurmountable and that every horrible manifestation of the whole illness is caused by too much adrenaline.

The cure takes a certain amount of time, but a good once a good understanding of what has been happening is realized, this feeling will inevitably follow. The sufferer has to take heart and realize that he/she has found the cure once he/she realizes that fearing the havoc adrenaline has been causing in his or her body feeds anxiety. He/she must also learn to not let this fear seize control of his life.

As you know, Anxiety Disorder is a serious illness but it can be cures and is being cured all the time. Now find out how to end anxiety and panic forever. Here are 2 free Websites to start you on your way to this cure. Dealing With Anxiety and Natural Anxiety Cures

Do you think antidepressants make people so emotionally numb that they mask the real problems? Antidepressants cause lots of side effects such as emotional numbing, dry mouth and fatigue that are difficult to live with. Is talk therapy typically more effective in treating depression or anxiety? Can depression and anxiety be overcome through talk therapy alone?

Talk therapy, but a poll of around 1000 depression sufferers showed Cognitive Behavio(u)ral Therapy is better, and you can use the techniques learned through your whole life.

See http://curetogether.com/depression/ig/treatment-effectiveness-vs-popularity then http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2010/05/08/robert-whitaker-interview.aspx

Use the effective natural core treatments for depression at http://your-mental-health.8m.com/blank_27.html & read page B. If using a RECOMMENDED brand of St. John’s Wort (take with meals to avoid possible stomach upsets) view the websites about it on page B, and if using UP TO 50mg of 5-htp daily in addition (or UP TO 200mg of 5-htp if NOT using the wort) take with a very low protein meal, to maximise the amount crossing the blood/brain barrier, with no, or extremely little protein 2 hrs before, to 2 hrs afterwards. Anxiety; see pages 1, & i.

From Y!A: I haven’t tried zoloft, but since the very first lexapro tablet I ever took, I have never had an orgasm again. And I came off it a year ago. ~~~ Prozack numbed me but now im emotionless?
so my meds were changed and i got put on prozac and lamictal
im numb and have no feelings accept for the occ. low-bottom-pit feeling which comes but leaves. Now i’m emotion-less. I don’t like it. I just want to fee OK
I wish I knew. They ruined me. I want to sue. ~~~ by Rwrwrwr Member since:
23 February 2010 This is my opinion and what I would did and did do…

As soon as the side effects were worse than the depression I stopped. I think the meds themselves have made me worse. Sexual side effects ruin your life. They dont tell you how important that is.

Its also common that after going off SSRI’S that youll have suicidal thoughts. When therapy doesnt work you feel hopeless.

I’m in college right now and just don’t have time to find a therapist at the moment, so I’m on my own for now.

Anxiety is a mental condition and is mostly self created. U have just to recall your will power. Things over the things U are afraid of ; evaluate them and tell your mind that there is nothing in them to be worry about. Once U becomes able to neglect these little problems U will get rid off the anxiety.

Many people have been adversely affected by trauma or traumas in their lives and therapy is excellent for that. Having problems with relationships, mother, father, husband, child is a very good reason that some go into therapy. Some go into therapy to help their self esteem and change their lives for the better. Some who want to get out of an abusive marriage or friend can gain strength through therapy. Just about any problem that is adversely affecting a person’s life can be helped with therapy. Aside from mental illness that require medication as a therapist cannot prescribe medication. Some don’t know what is wrong with them and have to find out what the problem is so that it can be solved.

This is a very difficult answer to anyone to try to provide. In short, the drugs alone are rarely the answer. I am not some prohibishionist trying to argue against the value of drugs…certainly they have value. However, when treatment for anxiety is nothing more than meds, it is very unlikely to actually solve the problem. Best case scenario, the patient might find a system that works for them as to when they had them. Perhaps during these times that they are on the meds they feel better. But what about when they aren’t taking them? And how often are they taking them? Do they want to take them more often? Do they want to up the dose? Without resorting to scare tactics, these mind medicines are powerful and to give everyone wtih anxiety a bottle of pills and one sheet of paper probably isn’t going to really help them much. It would very well hurt them.

With therapy, you have a professional who can analyze your situation and try to get to the bottom of it. Why are you anxious? How anxious are you? How often do you experience anxiety? Are there things you could try to deal with these issues without meds? The therapist will have some techniques that you may find very helpful. In not, the therapist can work with a doctor to prescribe something for your anxiety. But that still won’t be the answer to all of your problems.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the best forms of treatment often combine both medication and therapy.

I went to see a psych today and they suggested meds+therapy to treat the cyclical anxiety/depression that I’ve been having for a long time.

I wanted to test out a mostly therapy-based approach first has anyone had any luck with it decreasing symptoms’ intensity/onset and such?

"cyclical anxiety and depression that you have had for a long time". Do you get depressed the same time each year–or season? A psychiatrist, being a medical doctor goes by the medical model to treat disorders.
A psychologist does not have the license to prescribe medication.
Many people have great success from counseling with a psychologist.
But if the source of the depression and anxiety come from something psysical–you’d be better off on medication and seeing a psychiatrist.
best wishes

I’m 23 and suffer from social anxiety and depression. I’ve seen 4 completely different psychiatrists and have been on medication since I was 16. I stopped taking my medication a year ago, it made me too numb, and now everything seems upside down. I feel uncomfortable talking about my feelings to anyone. I don’t know any other options. What else can I do?

Go to: http://ecouch.anu.edu.au/welcome Select "social anxiety" for free Cognitive Behavio(u)ral Therapy. An exercise which may help you is called "Act as If." When you are in a social situation, act as if you are outgoing. Talk more; smile at people, ask questions, speak in a normal or excited tone, not a meek tone. Watch some of your more outgoing peers, and imitate the style of their social behavior. (PRETEND that you are an ACTOR, PLAYING a PART). Research shows that when you "act as if" continually, your image of yourself begins to conform to your new behavior. In this case, you will gain self-esteem and self-confidence, and begin to see yourself as socially normal, not shy. You will become more socially successful, and this will motivate you to continue your new social behavior until it becomes a habit. A form of therapy is to go somewhere that nobody knows you, and deliberately make an utter fool of yourself: put on a paper hat, and yell out: "I’m queen/king of America!", or something else ridiculous, (make up your own – have some fun, safely) then get back in the taxi, (warn the driver of your intentions, first) or car, and leave. People will point, and say: "Look at that idiot". Or, possibly in the company of a friend, or family member, on a different train, or bus route to your regular one, call out the names, or numbers of all the stops. It will teach you that, although it isn’t actually pleasant, (EXPECT MODERATE DISCOMFORT/EMBARRASSMENT) you will survive; be stronger for the experience, and the next time (should you need to repeat this type of therapy) will be considerably easier. Remember: "A fear avoided is a fear strengthened; a fear faced is a fear reduced." Regard it as your final test: once you have accomplished it, the barrier will be broken; just don’t go too far, the other way! Learn to laugh at yourself, and give a big, cheesy grin when others see you do something foolish, as we all do, occasionally. Use positive affirmations: for example: "I am very likable and other people feel comfortable around me".

Write down all of your self limiting beliefs; then write down, or print, in large type/capitalisation, the positive counter of them, (exact opposite) and repeat them and imprint them into your mind. Put it in a prominent position, where you will see it regularly. Most importantly: Force yourself to approach somebody and initiate some sort of communication. Start out small by asking the time, or directions and gradually go bigger. Although there are anti-anxiety medications (anxiolytics) available, these come with risks, and the possibility of side effects, habituation, even addiction, and withdrawal problems, and are unsuitable for young people. Try having a cup of "Tension Tamer", (from supermarket tea, or health food aisles) or make some at home, and cool, then bottle, and drink as needed. C(h)amomile tea tastes better. As with all herbal/green teas, use lemon/lime, and/or a little sweetener (NOT ARTIFICIAL!!!) but no cream, or milk. Xylitol, or Stevia is preferable, from health food stores. Valerian has also been recommended, but some people experience "valerian hangovers". Ensure you know how you react to it, before doing something potentially dangerous, like going out on the roads. The idea is to use the above products like water wings, to provide initial, short term support, while you become proficient in those techniques. Use a relaxation method daily, like http://www.drcoxconsulting.com/managing-stress.html or http://altmedicine.about.com/cs/mindbody/a/Meditation.htm or http://www.wikihow.com Meditate or Tai Chi, Qi Gong, or yoga. Give the EFT a good tryout, to see if it helps you. It is free via the searchbar at http://www.mercola.com "EFT" & "EFT therapists" or www.tapping.com (13 free videos). Professional is best. – There is a version for use in public places, (if you want to, you can claim to have a headache, as you massage/lightly tap your temples, but you would then be restricted to subvocalising: saying it to yourself in your mind: "Even though I suffer from social anxiety, I deeply and completely accept myself."

I have always suffered from horrible anxiety attacks, and nothing seems to help. I have been given different types of medicines for it but they seem to only temporarily fix the problem. Recently, one of my neighbors informed me that he has the same problem and his doctor suggested having a pet as therapy for it. I have heard of this before. Is this true? Can a pet really be good for these types of things? And if so, do doctors really "prescribe" pets?

Well, all I know is that my 2 dogs, 1 bird and a guinea pig all make my life a happier one. Animals bring love and companionship in a way people just can’t. Animals don’t judge you, don’t yell, don’t manipulate or put demands on you. All they want is to love and be loved. I have many medical issues as well as severe anxiety, and it really does help having animals around. My dogs seem to know when I am feeling extra bad/depressed and when that happens they don’t leave my side.
